Medical studies in France – Opportunities for foreign students.
Student Desk: Studies of medicine, pharmacy and dentistry are provided by universities associated with major hospitals, teaching hospitals (university hospitals). There are thirty one in France.
Foreign students (non-EU) can not join in any ongoing medical studies curriculum.
European students holding a diploma graduate medical education or its equivalent and foreign students who validated the second cycle of medical studies carried out in France fully followed however specializations (TCEM – Graduate School medical studies) normally (national ranking events and internship).
Foreign students (non-EU) who have not yet obtained a medical degree in his country must, whatever their level of education, following the first year of the first cycle (PAES since 2010) and passed the exam of end of the year. He then joined the equivalent level it had reached in his country.

The assistance of the internship as abroad (open to medical doctors from outside the EU) provides DES after an internship of 4 years (medical disciplines) or 5 years (surgery). It covers medical specialties, anaesthesia and intensive care, medical biology, gynecology and obstetrics, public health, psychiatry and surgery. In 2010, 20 interns were offered positions as such (no surgery). The list of available positions in the competition is known in February, the application deadline set for the end of March.
Degree of specialization for specific foreign doctors:
Degrees of specialization were created specifically for foreign doctors (non-EU), the first promotions were made:
– The DFMS (diploma of specialized medical training), obtained after 2-6 semesters. The course is open to physicians in specialization courses in their country of origin.
– The DFMSA (diploma of specialized medical training depth), obtained after 1-2 semesters. The course is open to physicians who already hold a sécialité.
The number of places offered is fixed for each branch and specialty by ministerial decree. Candidates must meet selection tests (including a language test). These events are organized locally by the Cultural Services Embassy in France in the first quarter.
In all cases medical studies require a good level of French (DELF B2 at least) from the candidates.
